Volume containing descriptions (1765 May 15-June 29) of a sea voyage from Philadelphia to Charleston, of the city of Charleston, and of the return voyage written by Pelatiah Webster. Also includes entries concerning plaster of Paris experiments (1765 Sept. 2-23), and a lengthy prayer [n.d.]. Webster describes Charleston's churches, the State House, fortifications, schools, the climate, agriculture, the lack of mechanical arts, and the products shipped (rice, indigo, lumber, and naval stores). Webster worshipped in four of the town's eight churches, made frequent visits to the Charleston Library Society, and was entertained extensively in both Charleston and the surrounding countryside.

Born in Lebanon, Connecticut, graduated from Yale in 1746, studied theology, and preached in Greenwich, Massachusetts (1748-1749). Although by 1755 Pelatiah Wester was very successfully engaged in mercantile business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he continued his studies and literary work.
